How to Pass the Maine Real Estate Exam in 2026

The Maine real estate sales agent exam is administered by Pearson VUE and regulated by the Maine Real Estate Commission (MREC). The current exam has 120 scored questions and four hours divided between the general and Maine-law portions.

Step 1: Complete the 55-Hour Pre-License Requirement

Maine requires 55 hours of MREC-approved pre-license education. Complete the current course and eligibility requirements before scheduling through Pearson VUE. The current course and exam eligibility window is one year; follow MREC instructions to keep the course, exam, and licensing steps within that window.

Step 2: Know the Exam Format

Total Scored Questions: 120

General Portion: 80 scored questions and 2.5 hours

Maine Law Portion: 40 scored questions and 1.5 hours

Pretest Items: The current handbook includes qualified unscored/pretest items; the number shown can vary by portion and exam form

Total Time Limit: 4 hours

Passing Score: Scaled score of 75 on each portion

Exam Fee: $88

Administered By: Pearson VUE

If you fail one portion, follow the current Pearson VUE partial-retake process for only the failed portion. A new registration and fee apply, and the current process requires a 24-hour wait before rebooking. Do not let the one-year course and exam window expire.

Step 3: Study the Official Content Areas

Use the current Pearson VUE handbook and Maine outline for property ownership and land use, transfer of title, valuation and appraisal, financing and settlement, agency and fiduciary duties, contracts, fair housing, real estate math, Maine license law, disclosures, trust accounts, and other Maine-specific topics listed in the current materials.

Step 4: Build a Focused Study Plan

Divide study time between the general and Maine-law outlines. Use practice questions to find weak areas, review missed answers, and verify Maine-law details against current MREC and Pearson VUE materials. Keep personal score targets and pacing goals separate from official exam requirements.

Step 5: Prepare for Exam Day and Licensing

Schedule through the current Pearson VUE Maine real estate page and use its live appointment and location instructions.

Follow the current Pearson VUE handbook for identification, arrival, materials, calculator, and score-report requirements. After passing the required portions, complete the current MREC licensing application and broker-affiliation steps in the order directed by MREC.
