How to Pass the Iowa Real Estate Exam in 2026

The Iowa real estate salesperson exam is administered by PSI under the Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals & Licensing (DIAL) and the Iowa Real Estate Commission. The exam has 120 scored questions and 180 minutes divided between national and Iowa-specific portions.

Step 1: Complete the 60-Hour Pre-License Requirement

Iowa requires completion of the 60-hour pre-license course before exam eligibility. Follow current DIAL instructions for education completion and registration.

Step 2: Know the Exam Format

Total Scored Questions: 120

National Portion: 80 scored questions and 120 minutes

Iowa Portion: 40 scored questions and 60 minutes

Pretest Items: 5–10 unscored items may be mixed into the examination

Total Time Limit: 180 minutes (3 hours)

Passing Score: 56 of 80 (70%) on the national portion and 28 of 40 (70%) on the Iowa portion

Exam Fee: $95

Administered By: PSI

The portions are scored independently. Use the current DIAL and linked PSI materials for registration, scheduling, and any current retake instructions. A registration must be used within 90 days under the current Iowa source record; confirm the current deadline when registering.

Step 3: Study the Official Content Areas

Use the current PSI outline for national property ownership and land use, transfer of title, valuation and appraisal, financing and settlement, agency and fiduciary duties, contracts, fair housing, and real estate math.

For Iowa, review the current outline for Iowa license law, seller disclosure, agency and disclosure, closing procedures, and trust-account requirements. Do not assume that a study topic has a particular exam weight unless the current outline states it.

Step 4: Build a Focused Study Plan

Divide study time between the national and Iowa outlines. Use practice questions to identify weak areas, review missed answers, and verify Iowa-law details against current DIAL and PSI materials. Keep pacing and readiness targets as personal study choices rather than official requirements.

Step 5: Prepare for Exam Day

Schedule through the current PSI Iowa real estate registration flow and follow its current instructions for an available test-center or online-proctoring appointment. Do not rely on a static city list.

Follow the current PSI bulletin for identification, arrival, calculator, note-material, and score-report requirements. After passing, submit the Iowa license application and separate license fee through the current DIAL process.
